Ita Bag Glossary

35 essential terms every ita bag fan should know — from insert basics to Japanese fandom vocabulary.

A

A transparent plastic character standee placed inside an ita bag window. Acrylic stands are cut to the shape of a character and stand upright on the insert. Common merch format from anime and K-pop shops.

A rigid clear panel (PMMA/acrylic) used as the display window on higher-end ita bags. More scratch-resistant and optically clear than PVC; tends to appear on premium or structured bag styles.

B

A backpack-style ita bag featuring a large display window on the front panel. The most popular format for large pin and merch collections; window sizes range from 25×20 cm up to 40×30 cm on XL models.

The completed arrangement of pins, plushies, standees, and other merch inside an ita bag window. ‘Showing my build’ means sharing a photo of your finished display. Builds are often themed around a single fandom or oshi.

A circular pin with a printed paper face and metal pinback, laminated under a clear dome. Also called a can badge or button pin. The most affordable and common format of ita bag decoration. Standard sizes: 25mm, 44mm, 58mm.

C

Japanese term for button badge — a circular printed badge with a metal pinback. ‘Can badge’ is the standard name used in Japanese fandoms and merch shops. Functionally identical to a button badge.

A small decorative pendant attached to a bag strap, zipper pull, or handle. Charms are separate accessories — not pinned to the insert — and add decoration outside the display window.

The transparent panel on the front of an ita bag that lets you display merch while protecting it. Made from PVC or acrylic. Window size and shape (rectangular, heart, oval) vary by bag style.

An ita bag designed to serve multiple carrying styles — for example, a bag that converts between crossbody and backpack mode, or one whose straps can be removed to use as a clutch. Popular for flexibility at events.

A compact ita bag worn across the body on a single shoulder strap. Usually has a smaller window (15–22 cm) than backpack styles. Ideal for everyday carry and beginners building their first collection.

D

A display window with significant depth (10–15 cm or more) to accommodate 3D items such as plushies, nendoroids, and acrylic stands. Standard flat windows are typically 3–5 cm deep; deep window bags are specifically designed for bulkier merch.

See: Insert. The board-like panel inside the ita bag window where pins and badges are attached. Same term, used interchangeably.

E

A metal pin with recessed areas filled with colored hard enamel or soft enamel. More durable and detailed than button badges; often used for limited-edition or premium merch. Attaches via butterfly clutch or rubber backing.

F

A community of fans centered around a shared interest — anime series, K-pop group, video game, or other media. Ita bags are a physical expression of fandom identity; most bags are themed around one or more fandoms.

An overhead photograph showing all ita bag contents arranged on a flat surface. Used to plan a build before pinning, or to share your collection with online communities.

G

A traditional Japanese cloth bag adapted for use as an ita bag. Originally used to store goshuin (temple/shrine stamp books), goshuin bags often feature traditional Japanese patterns and are repurposed by ita bag fans for unique display aesthetics.

H

A heart-shaped transparent display window; one of the most recognizable ita bag styles. Popularized in Japanese fandom culture. Heart window bags are common in crossbody and backpack formats.

I

The display board inside the ita bag window. Pins, badges, and standees are attached directly to the insert. Insert materials vary: foam board, fabric-covered board, or rigid acrylic. Most YourItBag products include an insert; check each product page.

The first character of ‘ita bag.’ In Japanese, 痛 (ita) means painful — originally referring to the financial pain of buying lots of fan merchandise, and the social vulnerability of displaying it publicly. Now used positively within fandom culture.

A bag (typically a tote, backpack, or crossbody) featuring a transparent display window through which pins, plushies, photocards, and other fan merchandise can be seen. The name derives from the Japanese 痛バッグ (itabaggu). Ita bags are central to anime, K-pop, and gaming fan culture worldwide.

K

Japanese aesthetic concept meaning ‘cute’ (可愛い). Kawaii style is a major influence on ita bag design — pastel colors, rounded shapes, character motifs, and decorative frills are all kawaii design elements.

A decorative accessory on a key ring, often featuring a character or logo. Keychains are attached to bag zippers, straps, or D-rings as external decorations, separate from the pinned insert inside the window.

M

Short for merchandise — the fan goods collected and displayed in an ita bag. Includes pins, badges, photocards, acrylic stands, plushies, keychains, and any other collectibles from a fandom.

A small ita bag, typically with a window under 15 cm. Good for beginners or fans with a focused, small collection. Also used as a second bag for events when a full backpack isn’t practical.

N

A chibi-style (big-headed, small-bodied) poseable collectible figurine produced by Good Smile Company. Nendoroids are a popular item to display in deep-window ita bags; standard height is 10 cm.

O

From the Japanese 推し (oshi), meaning ‘the one I push/support.’ Your oshi is your absolute favorite character or idol — the one you collect the most merch for. Ita bags are often built entirely around a single oshi.

From 推し活 (oshi + katsu/活動 activity). The practice of actively supporting your oshi by buying merch, attending events, streaming releases, and sharing fan content. Ita bags are a central part of oshikatsu culture.

P

A small printed card featuring an idol or character, typically trading-card sized (5.4×8.5 cm). Photocards are the primary merch format in K-pop fandoms and are displayed in ita bags using card sleeves and flat-window inserts.

General term for any badge or button attached to an ita bag insert. Includes button badges, enamel pins, acrylic pins, and rubber pins. Pins are secured through the insert fabric with their backing.

A soft stuffed toy (plush figure) featuring a character. Plushies require deep-window ita bags due to their 3D bulk. Popular sizes for ita bags: 10–20 cm. Look for bags labeled ‘plushie display’ or ‘deep window’ for the best fit.

A display window made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. PVC windows are flexible, lightweight, and cost-effective. Most entry- and mid-range ita bags use PVC windows; they can cloud slightly over time with rough handling.

R

A circular ribbon or fabric decoration, often featuring a printed center featuring your oshi or favorite character. Rosettes are attached to bags, clothing, or pins as a statement display piece; popular in idol fandoms.

S

A structured box-style ita bag with a top handle and rigid sides. Satchels provide more protection for the display window and give a more formal look than soft crossbody bags. Less common than backpack or crossbody styles.

A small figure designed to stand upright. In ita bag context, usually refers to an acrylic or paper standee of a character. Standees display well in deep-window bags and add a 3D element to a flat pin display.

T

An open-top, tote-style bag with a display window. Less structured than backpack or crossbody styles; the window is usually on the front exterior panel. Spacious interior makes it practical for conventions.

W

Interchangeable with ‘insert.’ The display board inside the transparent window where merch is attached. When ordering replacement inserts, look for dimensions matching your bag’s window opening.
